Why is my food being collected separately from my garden waste?

It has been proven nationally that by providing a smaller separate food bin, the amount of food that is put into the residual waste bin reduces significantly and is put in the food waste bin.  This waste is then taken to a processing plant and converted into biogas and fertilizer.

    Why bother recycling?

The Council and Central Government believe that we cannot keep stripping the Earth of its natural resources and supports the aims of the circular economy, where we use materials and then reuse/recycle them to ensure that we minimise damage caused to our natural environment.  The Council also supports the elimination of unnecessary single use plastics.  Recycling and composting more also reduces the Council’s Carbon Footprint

    • Liquids such as milk or cooking oil
    • Packaging of any kind

    How to avoid smells

One of the key benefits of a separate food waste collection is that you can empty your kitchen caddy more regularly than your ordinary general waste bin, as it is smaller. This will help to avoid any unwanted smells.

Using a liner and washing out your caddy regularly will help prevent smells, too.

How to prevent flies and maggots

Food waste will not create flies or maggots on its own if correctly managed. However, these may appear if the food waste is left out in the open for flies to lay their eggs. You can prevent your food waste from attracting flies by:

    • always emptying food waste straight into the caddy and not leaving it out on the kitchen side
    • keeping the lid of your kitchen caddy closed and locked when not in use
    • tightly sealing your liner before disposing of it in the kerbside caddy
    • regularly washing out your caddy
    • keeping the lid of your kerbside caddy closed and locked when not in use.
    • If possible, keeping the kerbside caddy out of the sun.

These tips are especially important to follow in hot weather when the flies’ life cycle is shorter.

My Food Waste Caddy has not been collected

Sometimes the collections are delayed and therefore please wait until the next day before raising a missed bin report  (missed bins)

and we will aim to collect the food waste bin within 2 working days from the day you raised the report.

(Please note that you may receive an automated email saying your bin will be collected on the next collection day, please disregard.  We are in the process of updating this).
