Examples from the forum:
*************************************
Learning from previous projects -
Tours with residents
Training and post-occupancy review
*************************************

*************************************
Leading by example in housing and regen projects

Design in Planning PROCESS EXPERIENCES (DF 12.09 Whiteboard)

Process Experiences
Your experiences of how the design process works in Thurrock and how it can align with your design approach.
Example from the forum:
*************************************
Expectations not being clear from the start.
Lack of negotiation and earlier meetings so that design decisions are expensive to undo.

Design in Planning LOCAL EXAMPLES (DF 12.09 Whiteboard)
over 1 year agoDesign in Planning
Great Local Examples of Design
Examples of schemes you have seen in Thurrock that showcase great design.
Examples from the forum:
*************************************
Question: what are the bad examples that the Council is seeking to avoid?
*************************************
High House production park - heritage building saved, great for local training, culture and employment
*************************************
State Cinema in Grays, a heritage icon that could form the basis for town centre regen?

Design in Planning COMMON CHALLENGES (DF 12.09 Whiteboard)
over 1 year agoDesign in Planning
Common Challenges
What common challenges and situations does Thurrock pose for designers?
Examples from the forum:
*************************************
Severance from heavy roads etc
*************************************
Low expectations due to past development
*************************************
Ensuring good quality, affordable and regular public transport is in place to help deliver higher quality developments that are not so dependent on private car use.
*************************************
There is an obvious (and good) interest in design quality, but there has to be a recognition that in speaking to communities, we cannot belittle the quality of the properties people are already living in. This should be about positive Thurrock, not little London.

Design in Planning DISTINCTIVE PLACES (DF 12.09 Whiteboard)

Distinctive Places
What are the distinctive places in the borough you think help define a sense of place?
Examples from the forum:
*************************************
The marshes and the Fenns
The Bata estate
The villages
The industrial landscapes on the Thames mixed in with the marshes.
*************************************
Locations such as railway stations and key interchanges provide an identity and key reference point to guide future design
*************************************
The Thames, both the landscape along the river and long views to and from.
*************************************
Views of Port cranes etc, does demonstrate the character of Thurrock as a 'working landscape'

Design in Planning DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES (DF 12.09 Whiteboard)

Design Opportunities
What new placemaking opportunities could new places deliver in Thurrock?
Examples from the forum:
*************************************
Affordable homes, services, and work places.
*************************************
Connectivity to existing communities is best delivered via larger scale sites
which allow for opportunities to deliver high quality routes for cycling and
walking which are convenient and attractive
*************************************
SEE Park, considering integrated and connected green infrastructure
*************************************
Considering how existing town centres can be improved to provide new residential
and other mixed uses that supports the local economy, services
*************************************
Compact neighbourhoods, where you can cycle and walk to essential services
*************************************
Placemaking could address issues of strained facilities and poor connectivity. Piecemeal development has created a host of issues over the year.
